The LANAP® Procedure - Atlanta, GA

Gum Disease Treatment - Sandy Springs - North Atlanta

At Solid City Smiles, Dr. Gregg Codelli and Dr. Sadja Gaud can tell you that LANAP® has several benefits to traditional gum disease treatment. But before you can understand these benefits, you need to know how LANAP® works. Laser gum surgery is different from regular dental surgery in a few key ways. This is how it works:

  • First, the periodontist will measure the depth of your periodontal pockets to determine how much loss of attachment has occurred due to advanced gum disease. This is done by inserting a tiny fiber between your tooth and gum.
  • Then a pulsed laser is used to remove all bacteria and diseased tissue from the area. This is a highly intelligent laser that is able to distinguish between healthy and infected tissue. Patients experience little to no pain or discomfort during the process.
  • The next step in LANAP® dental surgery is to remove calculus from the surface of the teeth. The laser alone cannot do this so the periodontist will use ultra-sonic scalers for this part.
  • Then Dr. Codelli or Dr. Gaud will make a second pass with the laser. This is done to stimulate the bone and soft tissue to promote regrowth. During this part of the dental surgery, a blood clot is also formed and creates a tight seal around the tooth.
  • The next step is to recompress the tissue against the surface of the tooth. Unlike with traditional dental surgery, our doctors do not need to use sutures for this step.
  • The final step is to adjust your bite. We will examine your teeth to make sure no considerable amount of trauma has been done.

As you can see, there is no cutting or stitching involved in laser dental surgery. This is how LANAP® is able to reduce pain and discomfort. Very rarely will our doctors need to prescribe pain medication to a patient for this advanced dental surgery. Regular maintenance keeps the symptoms of gum disease at bay.
