Dental Implants Are The Healthier Restoration Option
Before you consider dental implants in place of missing teeth, you should understand how the process of implant dentistry works. In all cases, implants are made from three separate pieces:
- The implant – This is a small post made from titanium that Atlanta periodontist, Dr. Codelli or Dr. Gaud surgically implant into your jaw. Once we place the implants in your jaw, you are given a three to six month waiting period while the implant fuses with the bone. This creates a natural structure similar to that of a tooth root. This is how dental implants are able to function as natural teeth.
- The abutment – After the metal and bone have sufficiently fused to hold the tooth implant in place, we fit the abutment on top of it. The abutment is designed to attach the crown to the implant. This will protrude slightly above the gum line but will never be visible after the crown is placed.
- The crown – The last step is to put the crown in place. The crown is usually made from ceramic and is shaped to look just like a real tooth.
Previously, patients who were missing teeth had to choose between a fixed bridge and dentures. However, these solutions can lead to further complications. A bridge can often damage otherwise healthy teeth, and dentures cause deterioration of bone and tissue. Within the first five to seven years, there is 30% failure rate among these treatments. Dental implants, in this light, are a more sustainable and cost effective solution.
As periodontists at Solid City Smiles, Drs. Gregg Codelli and Sadja Gaud are trained as implant dentists in Atlanta, GA and Sandy Springs, GA. If you can undergo regular dental work, you are most likely a candidate for dental implant placement. In situations where bone loss has occurred or gum disease is present, treatments for these conditions may be required before we can place the tooth implant. However, this tooth replacement option will provide you with a lifetime of natural appearance and functionality.
